5 Early Warning Signs of Termite Infestation You Must Never Ignore

Termites are called "silent destroyers" for a reason. By the time most homeowners notice the damage, thousands of rupees worth of property has already been lost.

5 Early Warning Signs of Termite Infestation You Must Never Ignore

Termites cause an estimated β‚Ή15,000 crore worth of damage across India every year β€” more than all natural disasters combined in some states. What makes them so dangerous is their invisibility. By the time you see obvious damage, a colony of hundreds of thousands of workers has already been quietly eating through your home for months or even years.

Knowing the early warning signs can save you lakhs of rupees in structural repairs. Here are the five most important ones.

Sign 1: Mud Tubes Along Walls and Foundations

Subterranean termites β€” the most destructive species found in Odisha β€” build pencil-width mud tubes to travel from soil to food sources while staying protected from open air. Look for these brownish tunnels along your exterior walls, foundation edges, crawl spaces, and around pipe entries. Even if the tube appears old and dry, break a small section β€” active termites will repair it within a day or two.

Sign 2: Hollow-Sounding or Blistering Wood

Tap on wooden doors, door frames, window sills, and skirting boards. A hollow, papery sound means termites have eaten through the inside, leaving only a thin outer shell. You may also notice blistering or bubbling paint on wooden surfaces β€” this looks like water damage but is actually caused by termites creating moisture inside the wood as they digest it.

Sign 3: Discarded Wings Near Windows and Light Sources

Every monsoon season, mature termite colonies produce winged reproductives called "alates" or "swarmers" who fly out to establish new colonies. After their brief flight, they shed their wings. Finding small piles of translucent wings near windowsills, light fixtures, or door frames β€” especially after the first rains β€” is one of the most reliable indicators of a nearby termite colony.

Sign 4: Frass (Termite Droppings)

Drywood termites, while less common than subterranean termites, push their droppings out of small holes in infested wood. These droppings, called frass, look like tiny pellets or sawdust β€” often cream to brown in colour. Finding frass beneath wooden furniture or along wall bases should be treated as an emergency sign requiring immediate professional inspection.

Sign 5: Tight-Fitting Doors and Warped Windows

If a door that used to open smoothly now sticks or feels tighter, termites may be eating through the frame. As they digest wood, they produce moisture that warps and buckles it. This is often misattributed to humidity swelling, causing homeowners to miss a critical early warning until the damage becomes severe.

What to Do If You Spot Any of These Signs

Do not disturb the area or apply any store-bought spray β€” this scatters the colony deeper into your walls and makes treatment more difficult. Call a professional pest control company immediately for a thorough inspection. EPCS offers free termite inspections across Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri, with same-day reporting and treatment plans.

Remember: termite damage is progressive and exponential. A small colony today becomes a structural threat within 18 months. Act early, act decisively.
